Congress Poised to Reveal Kerala Chief Minister Candidate in High-Stakes Leadership Announcement in New Delhi
The Indian National Congress is set to announce its Kerala Chief Minister candidate in New Delhi after extensive internal deliberations. With K C Venugopal, V D Satheesan, and Ramesh Chennithala in contention, the decision, overseen by senior observers and Rahul Gandhi’s consultations, marks a pivotal moment in the party’s state leadership strategy.
According to party sources, the formal declaration is scheduled around 12 PM at the AICC headquarters, in the presence of senior leaders and appointed observers overseeing the selection process. The key observers managing the exercise include Mukul Wasnik, Ajay Maken, and AICC General Secretary Deepa Das Munshi, who have been tasked with coordinating consultations and consolidating feedback from party legislators.
Three prominent leaders emerged as frontrunners in the leadership race: K C Venugopal, V D Satheesan, and Ramesh Chennithala. Among them, K C Venugopal is reportedly leading the contest, with internal consultations indicating strong backing from a majority of legislators. Party sources suggest that nearly 35 legislators have expressed support in his favour, strengthening his position ahead of the formal announcement.
V D Satheesan, the Leader of the Opposition in Kerala, remains a significant contender, backed by his consistent grassroots presence and his active role in opposing the ruling Left administration. His support base is seen as anchored in sustained legislative engagement and organizational outreach across the state.
Ramesh Chennithala, a senior and experienced leader within the party, also remains an influential figure in the internal discussions, reflecting the party’s effort to balance experience with electoral strategy and organizational strength.
The delay in finalising the decision had triggered widespread political speculation, with internal observers highlighting the challenge of reconciling competing priorities within the state unit. Party leadership, including Rahul Gandhi, is understood to have held consultations with key stakeholders as part of the final decision-making process, ensuring broader consensus before the announcement.
The forthcoming declaration is expected to mark a decisive moment for the party in Kerala, shaping its electoral strategy and internal balance of leadership ahead of future political contests.
